Our Guide To Celebrating Earth Day!

Apr 06, 2021
Happy Earth Day!

In May of 2020, the official Earth Day Network issued a press release stating that the theme for Earth Day 2021 will be Restore Our Earth. This theme challenges the idea that the only way to help our planet is to adapt to the damage already done.

EDN’s hopeful “Restore Our Earth” theme encourages individuals, businesses and government organizations to go beyond adapting to the changes that have occurred and fight for the restoration of our planet.

This article serves as a mini-guide to Earth Day and how you can celebrate it with yourself, your family or as a business!

Why Earth Day Is Important

April 22nd, 2021 will mark the 51st anniversary of some 20 million Americans organizing peaceful protests in hopes of raising awareness for climate change while actioning a healthier, more sustainable environment. These gatherings were huge and were a partial response to a devastating 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California.

Since then, the Earth Day protests have evolved into a thriving global organization that has touched every corner of our planet.

Annual Earth Day activities serve to bring awareness to the deterioration of our ecosystems and have sparked initiatives within businesses and organizations to bring education on climate change and living a greener lifestyle to the forefront.

Plant Something In Your Garden

A great way to feel connected to our planet is to plant something. This can be as simple as repotting your favorite (or new!) succulent or by planting a tree or favorite flower.

Gardening is incredible for mental health and serves to ground us as humans spiritually and emotionally, by connecting us to the earth. What better day to do this than on the day that is devoted to celebrating and protecting it?

Ride Your Bike

Cycling is a great way to exercise and enables us to see more scenery and enjoy Earth’s simple pleasures more than any other sport.

Look up some local biking trails in your area and get cycling! What’s not to love about being connected to nature, sipping a cocktail of endorphins and moving your body?

Switch To Reusable Shopping Bags

Plastic grocery bags have done a considerable amount of harm to the environment. Plastic bags are rarely recycled and languish in landfills by the hundreds of thousands, all while taking about 500 years to degrade. They also release harmful toxins in the process.

Plastic bags also have a long history of harming marine wildlife, and are particularly deadly to leatherback sea turtles who confuse them for prey.

Reusable bags are not only beneficial for the environment, but they’re also much sturdier. Many major retailers have either done away with plastic bags or charge 5 to 10 cents for each one. Keep a few in your vehicle or purse and you’re all set!

Support Local Businesses Putting Green Initiatives at the Forefront

Supporting local businesses is a great way to live a greener, more sustainable lifestyle. For example, purchasing produce at your local farmer’s market greatly reduces the “food miles” that your produce goes through to get through you. This not only supports the vendor, but also the local farming operation that produced the goods.

Identifying local businesses that put green initiatives at the forefront of their business model is a great way to turn up the dial on living sustainably. Not only are you implementing the philosophies of Earth Day by doing this, but you’re supporting businesses who do so as well!
